Bronwen's Blackwork Library

Authentic Embroidery Patterns from an Italian Sampler

Most of these patterns were once available, but her site has 'gone dark'. This page includes more than half of the patterns that could once be found there, plus a few additional simple ones.

Katla's Blackwork Library

These are several of the 115 patterns that I have graphed from the 16th century Italian sampler located in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England. (T.14-1931). On the original sampler, most of the embroidery is in black silk but there are some patterns done in dark red silk and some in dark blue, gold-yellow, dark green and light green silk (single ply). The original work is on linen and is mostly back stitch (I know, I was surprised that it wasn't the Holbein stitch), but also includes some long-armed cross stitch. Acrobat Reader
